Persol Ratti 714

Persol Ratti

Founded in 1917 by Giuseppe Ratti, Persol sunglasses are amongst the oldest sunglass brands in the world. Originally designed for pilots and sports drivers, Persol is currently famous for its durable sports sunglasses.

The Persol Ratti is the golden grail of all vintage persol models - especially folding, handmade ones in Italy pre 1970. Persol sunglasses were a favorite of Steve McQueen - he can be seen wearing the Persol Ratti in classic movies such as Bullit, The Thomas Crown Affair and The Getaway.

Expect to pay a premium for Italian handmade vintage Persol 714 Ratti, . When purchasing a vintage pair of sunglasses, ensure that:

  • They are made in Italy by Ratti and not the Luxottica USA models (the italian models use a superior lens)
  • Ratti and Persol emblems engraved on the inner arm of the frames
  • Lenses should be hand-marked Persol
  • There should be the Persol Arrows on the sides of the frames

If you think around $3,000 is too much to pay for a vintage pair, consider that Steve McQueen's original Persol 714 Ratti went for $70,200 at an auction a couple of years ago. And did I mention they are vintage?
